Details on Acronym:   SGAS

SGAS
Write:<<SGAS JHHMMSS.ss+DDMMSS.s>>
<<SGAS JHHMMSS.s+DDMMSS>>
<<SGAS JHHMMSS+DDMMSS>>
N: about 100
Object:Grav. lensed image of a G  (SIMBAD class: LensedG = Gravitationally Lensed Image of a Galaxy)
Note:The SDSS Giant Arcs Survey (e.g. Hennawi et al., 2008AJ....135..664H) is an ongoing survey in the fields of optically-detected SDSS galaxy clusters for strongly-lensed sources. The suggested naming convention is used to specify the lensed sources themselves. As they are typically high redshift galaxies, many sources have already been subject to extensive study and follow-up observation. Our sample of strongly-lensed galaxies is already > 100, and as some cluster lenses produce images of several strongly-lensed galaxies, it is necessary to accurately designate each source by name in order to minimize confusion.
The first two references studying SGAS sources are given here.
