For a given position on the sky, SimPlay will display Simbad data sorted by categories (stars, galaxies, ...), overlaid on a background DSS image. Basic data (position, object type, magnitudes) about objects are also displayed, as well as a link to the original Simbad data.

Though primarily targeted for outreach usage, SimPlay will also be of interest for more advanced users.

You might want to give it a try, read the documentation or look at the screenshots.

It has an XML output which schema was turned by default to version 4 (http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/xml/sesame_4.xsd).

The sesame server is also available as a direct HTTP-GET engine, or as a Web service.
It converts the name of an astronomical source (outside the Solar System) into a position in the IRCS (J2000) reference frame, using Simbad, NED and VizieR databases.

The new version (4) returns more Simbad parameters, and can resolve several target names in a single call. The previous version (2) may still be accessed if necessary. Details are given in the

A new version of the Aladin server is available through the various versions of all the Aladin interfaces, since Thursday July the 24th.

It is based on a new internal organisation, but for the end user it is mainly faster, and provides enhanced quality metadata in a more uniform way. The two modes of metadata display in the metadata tree each have their benefits.

In addition to Schmidt surveys (DSS1, DSS2 and Mama digitizations) 2MASS, IRAS-IRAS and WENSS surveys, the server now also provides access to DENIS images.

This 'popularity' is computed from the relative frequency of queries addressed to a specific catalog, on a log scale. A click on this progress bar displays an histogram of queries over the last 2.5 years.



- New design in "Catalogue Selection Page".

- The 'VizieR search engine' that you may plug in your browser can execute a search by cone -- just by typing a selection of catalogs, and a position preceded by 'c=', e.g. 2MASS,USNO-B c=HD226868 .

- Several bugs were fixed -- thanks to those who forwarded the problems !

- Some defaults were changed:
-- the target radius is now 2arcmin by default.
-- all columns are displayed in the "Catalogue Selection Page", (previsouly only the columns of the 'main column set' were shown in this page).
-- the Unified Column Descriptors (UCDs) which give a classification of the column contents are shown by default.

"The Digital Object Identifier (DOI®) System is for identifying content objects in the digital environment". The main journals available in Simbad have defined DOIs for each paper. Simbad has begun to introduce such article identifiers in the database. They are available for reference queries where a regular bibcode can be used. They are also displayed, when they exist, with a reference.

Currently, about 12000 DOis from the AJ journal from 1886 to 2007 have been entered.
