Paolo Padovani (ESO) - Introduction to the VO

The Virtual Observatory (VO) is going to revolutionise Astronomy, by allowing easy access to all astronomical data and by making the handling and analysis of datasets at various locations across the globe much simpler and faster. I will briefly discuss the need for the VO and its world-wide and European implementation through the International Virtual Observatory Alliance and the EURO-VO project. I will then highlight the role of data providers and the importance of VO compliance.
