T1-DCA-IST Telecon November 16, 2006, 1500 CET Present: Mark ALLEN (Chair) Matteo GUAINAZZI Piero ROSATI Santi CASSISI Enrique SOLANO (standing in for Eduardo MARTIN) Niv DRORY Gijs VERDOES KLEIJN Jonathan TEDDS Appologies: Eduardo MARTIN Agenda: - Welcome and introductions - DCA project plan - What is a data centre? - Role of the IST - Charter - Meetings - face to face meeting (March 2007?) - DCA workshops - IST involvement - Data Centre visits - IST involvement - Promoting DCA at national meetings - IST on the wiki : http://cds.u-strasbg.fr/twikiDCA/bin/view/EuroVODCA/WebHome - Relationship of DCA-IST to the EuroVO Science Advisory Committee (SAC) - Reports of partner scientific priorities - Data Centre Census *** Charter IST maintains the global scientific coherence of DCA activities: - Highlighting Scientific Drivers to motivate DCA take-up - Providing real science examples for use in the tutorials and workshops and to test and use the services - Identify science linkage across work packages - Pursure strategies and priorities defined by the Science Advisory Committee. *** Meetings Face-to-face meeting probably associated with VO spectra workshop at ESAC. There will be a number of smaller meetings/workshops throughout the project so we'll probably try to coordinate IST meetings to coincide with those for efficiency. *** DCA workshops Such examples, or science themes could come from our own ideas, or science priorities of the DCA partners - or via the Euro-VO Science Advisory Committee. *** Tutorials I think it's worth putting effort in here because the workshops, and also the online materials will be the sort of public face of the DCA, and I think we want that to be as comprehensive as possible. Comments, or ideas on that ? It's one of those fairly difficult things where we as scientists have to put some effort into bridging the gap between the science side, and the more technical aspects. I'd like to propose that when the tutorial subjects are decided (hopefully early 2007) that we look at the possibility of assigning one or two IST members to each tutorial to participate in the development of the tutorial, and get some science examples in there. *** Data Centre Visits There may be a role for IST members to get involved with visits to data centres. *** Promoting DCA at National Meetings all to consider giving a talk about DCA (and Euro-VO in general) at your natioanl astronomy meetings. The DCA partners are meant to represent their national communities, so talking at a national meeting about DCA would help get the word out. This will become easier i the second cycle of the project, after we've acheived something. *** IST on the wiki - IST members to register *** Relationship pf DCA-IST to the SAC. The SAC is made up of about 22 'leading' scientists who are not directly involved with VO projects, and who provide high-level science requirements to Euro-VO as a whole. Info about the SAC is on the Euro-VO pages, including their terms of reference and goals. There will be a SAC meeting next week. *** Reports of Partner scientific Priorities Particular themes from partners ? *** Data Centre Census Is one of the main deliverables of the project. There will be an initial census very soon, with contributions from each partner. Each partner IST member to take a look at the census being done by their partner. Actions: All- Get up to speed with the project plan All- Write down the scientific priorities of your partner. All- Look ahead to possible national meeting where you can give a talk about DCA
