Note:We use the Mann-Whitney U-test, in combination with a friends-of-friends algorithm, to identify extended reddened regions in the outer galactic plane using the 2MASS all-sky J-H-K survey. We process the data at two different resolutions, resulting in a high- and low-resolution catalog (1320 objects at 60" and 1589 objects at 90", respectively). The majority of extended red regions are associated with major molecular cloud complexes, supporting the hypothesis that the reddening is mostly due to foreground clouds and embedded objects.
