Note:Radio Galaxy Zoo (RGZ, http://radio.galaxyzoo.org) is a citizen science project launched in December 2013 and is currently supervised by about 40 team members. The goal of RGZ is to identify the host objects of complex radio sources in the FIRST survey (1995ApJ...450..559B Becker+) with the help of volunteers, based on overlays of FIRST radio contours on images from the WISE mid-IR survey in the 3.4 µm W1 band (2010AJ....140.1868W), as well as of ATLAS radio images overlaid on SWIRE survey images 2003PASP..115..897L Lonsdale+) These identifications can then be refined on other surveys like, e.g., the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The project is considered a testbed for future, much larger radio surveys from SKA Pathfinders like ASKAP, MeerKAT, LOFAR, etc., expected to yield several tens of millions of sources, of which ∼10 percent will be too complex to identify with computer algorithms. Whenever possible, the RGZ designations shall be based on the coordinates of the mid-IR counterparts (e.g. from WISE, AllWISE or SWIRE). In some cases when such a counterpart cannot be uniquely identified, but the source is considered worth being discussed in a publication, the best available radio position, or the most likely position for an optical/IR counterpart will be used.
Notes:Upon acceptance of the present acronym we plan to register further acronyms for special types of objects found within RGZ, like e.g. RGZCl for clusters of galaxies discovered from an investigation of the neighborhood of bent radio sources, RGZGRG for giant radio galaxies, most likely with a shorter coordinate sequence. We welcome suggestions on this by the IAU Task Group on Astronomical Designations
