Note:The XMM-Newton Observatory (http://xmm.vilspa.esa.es ) will produce serendipitous catalogues of typically 10's of X-ray sources and additional Optical / UV targets for each and every observation. While the eventual comprehensive catalogues will be produced by pipeline-processing of data by the XMM Survey Science Centre, we recommend this current designation for informal identification in individual fields' publications. XMMU is intended to be used for those serendipitous sources which need to be referenced in a paper. For work involving exploitation of the full set of serendipitously detected sources in one or multiple XMM-Newton fields we recommend the XMMAA, XMMAAA, etc. approach, where AA or AAA represent the authors' initials, and should be used for large interim surveys provided that the authors have submitted their acronym to the Acronym Registry (for further details see the IAU Specifications for Nomenclature web page http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/iau-spec.html). For sources detected with the automated optical monitor we recommend naming them XAU JHHMMSS.s±DDMMSS to distinguish them from XMM-Newton sources detected in X-rays. While the eventual comprehensive catalogues will be produced by pipeline-processing of data by the XMM Survey Science Centre, with the XMM acronym, we recommend this current designation scheme for informal identification in individual fields' publications. Only the two first references with XMMU objects are noted in the Dictionary.
