Use cases and demos

Here we collect examples of use of outreach interfaces Aladin and Stellarium/!VirGO. These examples have been designed for specific groups of our target public. Please help us with translations and/or more examples. Thank you!

Here you find the form to evaluate the activity and the software. If you are a teacher you can distribute it to your students to collect feedbacks, and then send us the results. Trovate qui il modulo (in italiano) per la valutazione dell'attivitā e del software. Gli insegnanti possono stampare il modulo e distribuirlo agli studenti, poi raccogliere i risultati e comunicarceli. Gli utilizzatori del software possono compilare il modulo online. Serious amateur astronomers and advanced education:

  • Confirmation and properties of a supernova explosion (sn2008s_en.pdf)

This is an example on how an amateur astronomer participating in a supernovae search program can take advantage in using Aladin (or other softwares that provide access to VO data) to verify an apparent supernova. You can download the image ngc6946.fit (right click and then "save link as") with the apparent supernova and follow the turorial to see if it is really a new star or not. - Reluctancy to use command lines - develop menu with basic commands?

- Many amateur astronomers didn't know Aladin. They used it now for the first time and found it very useful.

- Someone knew Aladin but didn't use it because of the english language - importance of italian translation


High school (13-14 yr) teachers and students:

Here a brief introduction on the sky (apparent motion, coordinates, light pollution), a detailed description of the tutorial and activities/exercises for students (The_sky_long.pdf)

An introduction on the stars (their colors and magnitudes) and the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram. In the exercise students are invited to find some stars in Stellarium and build a HR diagram.

An introduction on galaxies and their morphological classification according to the Hubble Sequence. In the exercise students are invited to load some galaxies in Aladin, classify them and fill a Hubble Sequence diagram.


High school (14-18 yr) teachers and students:

  • Proper motion of the Barnard's star in Stellarium (Proper_motion_stellarium.pdf) Also Stellarium, if set up correctly, allows to see the proper motion of the Barnard's star.

We will compute the distance to the Andromeda galaxy using a particular type of variable stars: the Cepheydes.

Questo č un esempio di come un astrofilo impegnato in un programma di ricerca di supernove puō trarre vantaggio nell'utilizzo di Aladin, o altri software che hanno accesso ai dati del VO, per verificare la presenza di una apparente supernova e ricavare alcune sue proprietā. Potete scaricare l'immagine ngc6946.fit (cliccare con il dx e poi "salva destinazione con nome") e seguire l'esempio. L'immagine č stata ripresa dal Col Druscič Remote Observatory Supernovae Search ( CROSS ). - Riluttanza a utilizzare la riga di comando - svilippare un menu con comandi di base?

- Molti astrofili non conoscevano Aladin. Lo hanno utilizzato ora per la prima volta e trovato molto utile.

- Qualcuno lo conosceva ma non lo utilizzava perchč era in inglese - importanza della traduzione nella varie lingue.


Insegnanti e studenti (13-14 yr) delle scuole superiori:

Questo č un esempio di come gli insegnanti e gli studenti delle scuole medie inferiori possono trarre vantaggio nell'utilizzo di Stellarium per apprendere il movimento del cielo, le coordinate celesti. la differenza tra giorno solare e siderale, le costellazioni, ecc. Un'introduzione sulle stelle (colore e magnitudine) e sul diagramma di Hertzsprung-Russel. Gli esercizi prevedono che gli studenti cerchino alcune stelle in Stellarium e costruiscano un diagramma HR.

Un'introduzione sulle galassie e sulla loro classificazione morfologica in accordo con la Sequenza di Hubble. Gli esercizi prevedono che gli studenti carichino alcune galassie in Aladin, le classifichino e completino una Sequenza di Hubble.

Anche Stellarium, se configurato correttamente, permette di visualizzare il moto proprio della stella di Barnard.

  • La distanza della galassia di Andromeda (m31.pdf)

Viene illustrato come calcolare la distanza della galassia di Andromeda utilizzando una particolare classe si stelle variabili: le Cefeidi.

  • La distanza della Nebulosa del Granchio (m1.pdf)

Oberstufenschüler (14-18 Jahre) und Lehrer:
  • Wie weit ist die Andromedagalaxie entfernt? ( Projekt_M31.pdf) Berechnung der Entfernung von M31 über die Perioden-Leuchtkraft-Beziehung. Aladin/VizieR wird verwendet, um Cepheidenkataloge zu untersuchen und die Entfernung zu berechnen.
  • Eine Supernova in der Galacie NGC 6946? ( ngc6946.pdf) Verifizierung einer Supernova in der Galaxie NGC 6946 durch Vergleich mit Aufnahmen aus der VO-Datenbank.
  • Die Eigenbewegung von Barnards Stern: (barnard.pdf) Mit Aufnahmen aus dem VO wird die Eigenbewegung von Barnards Stern berechnet. Mit dem APFS-Tool von GAVO wird die tatsächliche Bewegung der Sterne am Himmel dargestellt.
  • Klassifikation von Galaxien: Die Hubble-Sequenz: ( hubble.pdf) Mit Aladin werden verschiedene Galaxien betrachtet und anhand des Hubble-Diagramms klassifiziert.
